A lobbying effort by the Union Cony Highway Safety Task Force paid off in convincing the state to add Shawneetown Bridge signs along the US 60 Bypass.
The local Task Force, at its February meeting, noted that there were no signs on the new bypass directing traffic to the Shawneetown Bridge. Gina Boaz, Regional Transportation Planner for the Green River Area Development District wrote the Transportation Cabinet at Madisonville about the situation on behalf of the task force
Chief District Two engineer Ted Merryman then wrote Boaz in April noting that the Shawneetown Bridge signs would be installed on the bypass with its intersections at US 60 East; KY 56 East; US 60 West; and KY 56 West.
"The installation of these signs should provide additional directional information for motorists traveling form Kentucky to Illinois," Merryman said in his letter to Boaz.
That task force had written that many motorists were not aware the bypass would provide an easier route to the Shawneetown Bridge that connects Kentucky with Illinois on KY 56 West.
The task force met last Thursday at the James D. Veatch Camp Breckinridge Museum & Arts Center.
In another matter, Boaz informed the task force that the GRADD Regional Highway Safety Program has been selected to receive a National Association of Development Organizations 2003 Innovative Award for its Highway Safety Task Forces which exits I all seven of the GRADD counties.
The award will be presented on September 15 in Minneapolis.
