June 6 is the 60th anniversary of World War II's Operation Overlord, better known as the Normandy Invasion.

To honor all regional World War II veterans and their families, a special commemoration service will be held at the Owensboro Sportscenter Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m.

This special free-to-the-public event, which will host Brigadier General (Retired) Leslie "Les" E. Beavers and Brigadier General Norman Arflack, will include The 101st Airborne Division Color Guard, a performance by the gospel group, Firm Foundation, and a D-Day remembrance, "So Proudly We Hail", by Theater Workshop of Owensboro. A public reception will follow the service.

World War II veterans from the region will be listed in the program and everyone is encouraged to call Kathy Olson, Curator of Collections at the Owensboro Area Museum of Science and History at 270-687-2732 or e-mail her at vets@operamail.com to have a veteran listed in the program. The deadline for submission of names is May 20.
