The filing deadline came to a close Tuesday afternoon and there was a flurry of late entries that assure Sturgis will have a new mayor and Morganfield Mayor Jerry Freer will be opposed in the November general election.
Freer, completing his first four-year term, will be challenged by Ginny Johnson who works at the Earle C. Clements Job Corps Center and by Mark Cunningham who is best known for his campaign to set up Ten Commandment signs in the county, along with other historical documents.
There's a crowded race in the Morganfield City Council where 12 are seeking the six seats.
All six of the incumbents filed, along with John F. Coffman Jr., who operates the city's water plant, and Steve C. Lopez who is the maintenance manager of the Union County Courthouse and Annex.
Also filing for the council at Morganfield is former councilman Mike Moore, along with Chris Bickett, Alvin Russelburg and Rhonda Burnette.
The incumbents are Mike Williamson, Michael H. Greenwell, Gary R. Lovell, Justin Wolfe, Dorothy Shelton Crutcher and Rick Wyatt.
There will be a race for Mayor in Sturgis when current councilman Mike Cowan and retied educator Roger Edmondson will square off to replace Dan Quirey, which means the city will have a new mayor come January.
Cowan is a coal miner and Edmondson retired a few years ago from the Union County School District where he was a long time teacher and then assistant principal at Union County High School.
Cowan has been a councilman for several years.
Quirey is not out of the picture though. He was one of several who are seeking one of the six seats on the council.
Those seeking the Sturgis City Council include political newcomer Jeffery Wilson. along with Norma Jean Markham, Henry B. Hina and Richard Vincent. Markham is a current council member, as is Vincent and Hina.
Also seeking a seat is Jeff Paris, who is an ambulance paramedic, and former city councilman Tommy Holt. His is the owner of Holt's Furniture. A total of seven have filed and the top six will be elected.
There will also be a race for mayor at Uniontown where long-time incumbent Raymond Turner is being challenged by Bryant Mann. Mann works for Brantley Pest Control.
Seeking the six seats on the city council are incumbents James Piper, Thomas "Dickie" Jones, William "Dan" McFadden, Kevin Ferguson and Pat Hammond.
Raymond Henry is not seeking re-election.
Others seeking a seat include Ed S. Turner.
As of press time only six had filed, meaning all will be elected to the council.
In Waverly, incumbent Mayor David Wolfe is seeking re-election and is unopposed.
Seeking the four seats on the council are Teresa G. Wolfe and Rose C. French. If no more file, the county judge executive will have to appoint two others to serve, unless they are elected in a formal write-in campaign.
There are two school board seats up for election this year and both incumbents have filed--Connie Thomas for the District 2 seat and William M, Greenwell of the District 4 seat.
Both face no opposition and evidently will be re-elected to a four-year term.
The drawing for the ballot positions will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday at County Clerk Billy Steve Peak's office in the Union County Courthouse.
