Emergency workers get Air Evac training

Paul Monsour / Advocate Editor pmonsour@ucadvocate.com

Members of the Morganfield Rescue Squad and The Morganfield Police Department got a first hand look at the Air Evan Lifeteam helicopter Saturday morning.

The copter landed behind the city's public safety building and made several flights around the city to acquaint the firemen and squad members with the copter's landing zone requirements.

The Air Evac Lifeteam is based at the Jenny Stuart Memorial Hospital Hopkinsville, but is not affiliated with the hospital.

Aboard the medial helicopter were Lunette Smith, the base nurse supervisor and Jason Ingram, the paramedic supervisor.

The pilot was Richard LaRock.

The team also discussed membership costs. Families, couples and single persons can subscribe to Air Evac Lifeteam service with a yearly fee.

The cost is $35 for a single person, $40 for a couple and $50 for a family per year.

For more information on subscriptions call the office at 270-881-9527.

The Air Evac Lifeteam provides 24-hours-a-day rapid medical transport for critically ill or injured people.

Smith said it took the copter 20 to 25 minutes to fly to Morganfield from its base at Hopkinsville.

The service was founded in 1985 and since that time has flown more than 35,000 people who were in critical need of care.

Air Evac Lifeteam was the first air ambulance service in the U.S. to offer a membership program.

The program allows Air Evac to serve smaller communities that otherwise may not be able to support an air ambulance service.

Membership subscribers pay a yearly fee which entitles them to use the helicopter during life or limb threatening emergencies at no additional cost.

Membership coverage also includes hospital-to-hospital transfers in life or limb threatening emergencies.

A single emergency flight can cost as much as $7,000.

Those who subscribe to the service will have their insurance companies billed for the service and Air Evac will accept the insurance payment as payment in full.

Those who subscribe and have no insurance coverage for air ambulance service will not be billed, according to Air Evac literature.

Air Evac has some 18 sites in a nine state coverage area that includes parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama.
