MORGANFIELD, Ky. — A Union County grand jury indicted a Morganfield man on Tuesday on a charge of murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend.
In addition to the murder charge, James Matthew Hedgepath, 35, faces charges of tampering with physical evidence, being a first-degree persistent felony offender and various other charges related to sexual assault.
Hedgepath is accused of killing his girlfriend, Henderson County resident Mary Reyes, 28.
The Kentucky State Police said Reyes died on Feb. 13, almost a month after she'd been physically assaulted.
The alleged assault occurred on Jan. 16 at the Whispering Meadows subdivision in Morganfield, authorities said. The state police were called to a residence there on the morning of Sunday, Jan. 17, where they found Reyes, who was unconscious and unresponsive, officials said.
Reyes was LifeFlighted to St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, where she was treated until her death.
Hedgepath was located and arrested on Jan. 18. He was lodged at the Union County jail.
