Jason Shaw and Melissa Rice of CGB accompany volunteer team members Susan Girten and Roy Robinson (not pictured) to randomly survey cornfields in the Sturgis/Pride area. Crop Tour team members tested stand count, kernel count, ear length, and average number of kernel rows per ear. These averages help to estimate corn crop yield in Union County for 2008.

In partnership with the Union County Extension Service, Consolidated Grain and Barge Company (CGB) in Uniontown held the annual Union County Crop Tour on Wednesday.

This is the third year CGB has hosted the Crop Tour in Union County.

Twenty farmers and representatives from the host services divided into teams to randomly survey corn yields in Union County. Each year, the tour provides an estimate of what the year’s crop will bring.

Following the National Crop Tour, the Union County Tour showed that yields here are expected to be above the national average and above the actual corn crop average of 2007.

Pioneer Pro Farmer sponsored the Midwest Crop Tour, which ended on August 21, and, after surveying 1,100 fields across seven Midwest states, expects that the national estimate will be 153 bushel yield.

In Union County, volunteers randomly tested yields in at least six fields in six different areas of the county. While the tour is not nearly as extensive as the Pro Farmer Tour, it does allow farmers a sort-of benchmark to expect from their crop.

CGB and volunteers expect that Union County will see a 166 bushel yield in 2008.

CGB representative Melissa Rice believes data shows this annual survey to be a good indicator of the actual yield.

Official copies of the day's finding may be picked up at CGB or the Union County Extension Office.
