The Braves soccer team traveled to New Harmony, Indiana last Tuesday night where they defeated the New Harmony team, 2-1. It was the first win of the season for the Braves, who are now 1-1-1 for the season.

New Harmony took to the scoreboard first with a goal that they scored in the first half, leaving the Braves trailing. However, during the second half of the game, the Braves made a 2-point comeback. Senior Clint French scored the first goal for Union County with an assist by Daniel Basse, followed by a second goal made by Basse with an assist by Matt Young.

Seeing the New Harmony game as a chance to get aggressive, Braves coach Davis Sprague traded his normal formation of 4-3-3 (four defensive players and three forwards) to a 3-3-4 (three defensive players and four forwards). The added offensive pressure was enough to get the Braves a win.

Turning in several good performances that night were Daniel Basse, Patrick Davis, Luke Ervin, L.J. McKenney and Corey Collins. Basse, who is a foreign exchange student from Germany, helped to keep pressure on the New Harmony’s defense while Davis made a solid defensive performance.

““I was pleased with his effort and his ability to play big against big opponents,” Coach Sprague said. “He is about 5’6 in height but plays like he’s 6’ plus. I’m very proud of his overall game and his mental toughness.”

The entire Braves soccer coaching staff had big expectations for Ervin, who played center midfield for that night’s game. Not one to fail, Ervin produced a good game as a player with good field vision. Freshmen McKenney and Collins both did an awesome job as they gave the Braves some added hustle from the bench.

“These two young men are fast and make things happen when they come into the game,” Coach Sprague said.

The Braves will play their next game on Monday, Sept.. 8, at Butler County. The game will start 7 p.m. and everyone is invited to cheer to them on.
