Last month, Superintendent Joshua Powell and family moved to Union County. For the past three weeks, they been wrangling boxes from Hardinsburg, Kentucky to their new Morganfield home.
Superintendent Joshua Powell spoke on Thursday at the Morganfield Lions Club Annual Banquet at the Feed Mill about his plans for Union County Schools.
“It’s very attractive to me when a community demands high results,” he said. “This (job) was ripe for the taking.” And Powell believes that with continued community support, Union County Schools can produce higher test scores.
“Currently Union County is ranked 143 out of 175 counties and it shouldn’t be,” he stated. “We are facing tough times, financial tough times. But in a short time, we’re going to take your kids and grandchildren to the next level.”
“High expectations,” he offered, “lead, over time, to better speaking. It shows in the way they carry themselves, and in the way they interact with adults.”
In a few short years, Powell’s own children will be students in Union County Schools. Powell and wife Anna are the parents of two young children, Noah, 2 and a half years old, and Leilani, 1.
“There are none of us- not the superintendent, not the principal, not teachers, or classified employees- that are any more important than our children and grandchildren. And I want my kids to be competitive not just in Kentucky, but nationally and globally.”
Powell will look for the community to support the tough decisions that will have to be made to raise expectations and test scores.
“We are going to be greatly dependent on you, Lions Club, Rotary Clubs, Economic Development, and business.”
Powell officially started his new position Tuesday, July 1. He welcomes all to come and see him, to share concerns and opinions.
