Morganfield Police break up check fraud ring

The Morganfield Police Department has arrested six Marion, Kentucy residents believed to be involved in an interstate check fraud ring.

Those arrested allegedly wrote checks throughout Western Kentucky, Southern Illinois, and the southern Indiana area. “If your business is holding one of these checks on the accounts listed below, you need to turn those checks over to the Law Enforcement agency in your jurisdiction that pursues bad checks,” Morganfield Assistant Police Chief Jeff Hart said.

Hart said over $8,641 in bad checks had passed at the Morganfield Wal-Mart store.

Nicole Thompson, Lead Accounting Associate at Wal-Mart, had discovered a pattern in the checks being returned to the store.

Hart reported that Thompson alerted the Morganfield Police Department, which then began an investigation.

“These checks are believed to have been passed from mid-November 2004 through mid-January 2005. The Morganfield Police Department will share its case files with any agency to assist them in their investigation into any of these checks they may have,” Hart said.

These checks were on the following accounts some of which are counterfeit:

The Kellie Timmons Account at the Clay City, Ill Bank.
The Kellie Timmons Account at the US Bank (Counterfeit).
The Kelly Timmons Account at the Peoples Bank, Marion, Kentucky.
The Monica Griffin Account on the Integra Bank, Fishers Indiana
The Monica Griffin Account on the Integra Bank, Sturgis Ky.
The Monica Griffin Account on the Farmers Bank and Trust, Marion Ky. (counterfeit)
The Monica and Lucas Griffin Account on Farmers Bank, Marion Ky.
The Lucas and Monica Griffin Account on the Clay City, Ill Bank.
The Novelties and More Lucas Griffin and John Kuzmik Account on the Clay City, Ill Bank.
The Greg Taylor Account on the Farmers Bank, Marion Ky.
The Ruby Koch Account on Farmers Bank, Marion Ky. (Counterfeit)
The Mary Ann Koch Account On the Farmers Bank, Marion Ky.
The Mary Koch Account on the Farmers Bank Marion, Ky.

Those arrested on February 12 were all from Marion, Kentucky They were identified as:

Kellie O. Timmons, 28; John S Kuzmik, Jr., 52; Lucas M. Griffin, 31; Monica J Griffin, 31; Gregory James Scott Taylor, 25; and Mary Ann Koch, 27.

The six are currently lodged in the Union Co. Jail on theft by deception charges.

Hart said engaging in organized crime charges are pending
