Traffic Engineers Conduct Safety Review on U.S. 60/Ky. 109 Intersection

Traffic Engineers from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Department of Highways conducted a traffic safety field review at the intersection of U.S. 60 and Ky. 109 in Sullivan on Monday. Union County Judge Larry Joe Jenkins requested the safety review following a fatal accident at the intersection earlier this month.

"We routinely conduct accident analysis reviews to determine the need for additional traffic control devices," said Kentucky Department of Highways District Two Traffic engineer Kenny Potts.

Potts requested assistance from Kentucky Department of Highways Transportation Engineering Specialist Tom Napier. The engineers conducted a review of the existing traffic control devices marking the intersection taking distance measurements to determine the location of any additional traffic control devices that may be appropriate.

"This intersection was reviewed in July of this year at the request of the Green River Area Development District Transportation planner. Following that review an additional stop ahead sign and a stop bar were installed," Potts said.

A check of traffic records at the intersection showed six accidents over the last four years. All of the accidents were after dark and involved vehicles failing to stop on the Ky. 109 approach. Potts says the engineers will take that factor into consideration as they complete their study and prepare recommendations for additional changes at the intersection.

Potts indicated those recommendations should be completed within the week.
